Don’t make someone a priority in your life when you’re only an option in theirs.

This is one of my favorite quotes.  Take a good look at the people in your life…family, friends, co-workers, significant others, etc.  Stop making excuses for poor behavior, don’t accept less than what you deserve, and weed out the ones who only care about their own needs being met.  As my friend Patricia says, “A relationship should complement, not complicate.”  What a difference it makes when you’re surrounded by only those who bring out the best in you.  How sad that I am now all alone…HA!

I can just imagine the words coming out of your mouth! I am sure that you had a little of your famous ROAD RAGE going on while driving to the other TB. Is it sad that my 5 year old begs for TB? Auntie Tricia has rubbed off on her. 🙂

“Don’t make someone a priority in your life when you’re only an option in theirs.”

Is this an orignial quote? Otherwise can you let me know who authored it please?

    • spiritquest13 says:

Hi Val, No it is not an original quote, just something I heard a long time ago. There are slightly different versions out there if you search the web. Sorry I can’t help you out on the author!

    • John says:

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) is responsible for popularizing it, while attributing it to the original author: I seem to recall it was Benjamin Disraeli (?) the British Prime Minister, although I’ve seen where someone else believed it was Ralph Waldo Emerson.

thank you for telling me before i made a big mistake!!!

its so true, often we end up letting others decide whether we are happy or sad, why isnt it possible for us to be responsible for our happiness ourselves. this quote seems to really strike a chord with so many people. its an apt eye opener

A friend from work just told me the quote “Don’t Make Someone Your Priority When They Only Make You An Option” and after googling it and reading some of the comments, I realized that’s exactly what I am, an option. I make sure that I keep all lines of communication open. Every day I send him a text wishing him a safe, pleasant, productive day and hours later he will text thank you. Sometimes he doesn’t even bother to reply. I met this man almost two months ago and I knew from the beginning that it would never be a true relationship, more of a friendship. At first he was very attentive and would call me every night and come visit me either during my lunch hour or after work twice a week, now he barely calls and when he plans on meeting up with me he cancels at the last minute. This friendship is still in the developmental stage and I wanted it to work because I enjoy his company, his compliments and humor. But eventually I think we will lose contact with each other.

Why is it that when reading this, it seemed to describe my current situation. It sucks to acknowledge the reality.. you always hope they’d come around. But nope. I have to stop making excuses and move on with my life with or without her.

    • Daisy says:

This sounds sop similar to my situation, except that I’ve been patient and waiting in hope that he’d change back to the attentive and caring person he was when we met 12 months ago. Instead, after the first 3 months, it has only gotten worst by the day. When he needs someone to talk to or to go out with I’ll be the first he’ll phone, but when he doesn’t feel like it he ignores me like a stop street. It is very frustrating and having heard this quote and read this blog I am realising that I am the cause of my own frustration, hurt and anger…because I am allowing myself to be just an option to him whilst I make him an absolute priority in my life!! I need to change it because for as long as I allow it and accept it he will take advantage of it. He might walk away and disappear forever or he might get a wake-up call and stay forever when I change what I accept and what not!?!? Who knows, but I realise that I need to be the change that I want in my world.
